The School of Global Studies is a creative and innovative environment for research and education in globalisation and global issues. We are looking for people who would find it stimulating to work within the School’s dynamic interdisciplinary forums. Together with holders of other positions at the School in Peace and Development Research, Social Anthropology, Human Ecology, Regional Studies and the study of Human Rights, the holder of this position will form part of a team whose primary responsibility is to work with the development of education and research within the School’s various subject areas.

This position covers teaching in international relations with a special focus on the relationship between peace and development. Teaching will be primarily at undergraduate level though some teaching at research level may also be required. Responsibilities include teaching both individual courses and on programmes. Scope for professional development/research is provided at the level stipulated in the general terms of reference for teachers at the University of Gothenburg. The successful applicant should be prepared to actively contribute to the development of the discipline by promoting and developing the School’s Peace and Development activities within the field of international relations.

Beyond the responsibilities outlined above, the holder of this position will be expected to participate in the department’s activities in pedagogical development and, when required, in administration and management. Since external funding provides important support for the research activities of individual teachers and of the School in general, the holder of this position will be expected to work actively to attract external funding.

According to the Swedish Higher Education regulations, applicants qualified for this position are those who hold a PhD or equivalent in Peace and Development Research, have undergone training in university pedagogy or have in some other way acquired equivalent pedagogical knowledge and have demonstrated pedagogical skills.

Applicants who do not meet the criteria for pedagogical training may initially be offered temporary employment (1 + 1 year) until such time as this requirement has been met, after which the temporary terms of employment will be exchanged for a permanent contract.

Particular weight will be given equally to research and pedagogical skills during the selection procedure. Merit will be given to qualifications in research and teaching in Peace and Development Research with special emphasis upon international relations.

In assessment of the candidate’s research competence particular weight will be given to their research in recent years and in their ability to initiate and conduct research. Research skills should be demonstrated in their research activities and publications in relevant areas. Assessment of pedagogical competence will take into consideration planning, carrying out and evaluation of teaching, supervision and examinations. Pedagogical skills should be thoroughly documented so that their quality may be assessed. Attention will also be paid to the candidate’s administrative abilities and their experience of working in the public sphere to disseminate information about research and development work. The candidate should be able to demonstrate an ability to collaborate. They also should be able to carry out teaching, supervision and examinations in both English and Swedish.

In the course of the selection procedure, applicants may be called for interview and asked to deliver a sample lecture and provide references. In interview, the applicant will be given an opportunity to describe and develop their own views of teaching and research in this subject and in relation to their role at the department. Where appropriate, these factors may form the basis of the final evaluation.
